Did you know that black bears are the State Mammal of Alabama? There is no open season for hunting black bears in Alabama, and it is illegal to harm, harass, or shoot them. Our neighbor, Allen Helms reported on Nextdoor seeing one in the Optimist Lake area a week ago. Good Morning. A few years back, before the loss of the lake, I did an environmental inventory of our lakeside area here in Highland Park Subdivision. We have lost a great many kinds of wildlife, waterfowl, plants, and insects, gone with the collapse of the dam. However, this year – three years later – we are recording new species! If you observe any new critter, insect, or plant in the area please contact us here at Highland Park Community Association, so we can add it to our environmental inventory list.
